Katarina began skating when she was five years old. Soon, her talents became apparent and she was invited to Karl-Marx-Stadt's special school. Coach Jutta was also there. Witt was able to make her debut year in 1982 after she came second in the World Championships held in Copenhagen. Her graceful style and elegance of Witt captured the eyes of everyone and she has dominating her sport since then. Olympic success at Sarajevo, at the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal in figure skating for women following a heatedly-contested competition. Witt won an even more close contest four years later. While she was unable to win the competition for free skating, the gold medal was awarded to her performances on the mandatory figures as well as the program in short form. Witt became the first woman to take home a gold medal in both male and female figure skating ever since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt was allowed to resume skating after her accomplishments in the film industry as an actor. She took part in the Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. Though she did not get a medal, she impressed her spectators despite finishing seventh. Witt got her induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame, 1995.
